STEVEN WALTER – 640 – Spruce and Walnut – 2017

2017, USA.  #239.  Millenium style, lattice braced solid Englemann Spruce soundboard, quilted Mahogany back and sides, 640 mm scale, 52 mm nut width,  raised fingerboard, soundports on either side of the heel, 20th fret, fret markers at V and XII, french polished finish, Sloan “Stippled” tuners with ebony buttons.  Walter is accomplished as a performer as well as a luthier.  It is worth visiting his website to get the whole story.  At any rate, his guitars evidence the concern for sound and playability of a performer.  This is spruce at its best!  The bass is deep and resonant, and the registers above sing out with distinct clarity.  The 640 scale and raised fingerboard create an effortless experience in making music.  It has been very interesting to see how a few talented luthiers, such as Walter, have developed the 640 scale to have projection and tone that is the equal of the 650.  Slight signs of use.  Hiscox case.
